The Pine Bluff School District will cut the ceremonial ribbon on its Star Academy for eighth grade students at Pine Bluff Junior High School at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Star Academy is a dynamic STEM-inspired, hands-on program proven to advance and inspire students through its project-based and technoloy-driven curriculum, according to a news release. Through their courses within the program, students can work both independently and collaboratively to develop academic, leadership and employability skills. Star Academy reinforces learning by tying lessons back to real-world scenarios and careers that students might experience outside of the classroom.

Superintendent Jennifer Barbaree highlighted the significance of launching the Star Academy program.

“Our district data indicates a large need for student support and intervention. We have data showing academic and social growth of our students that have participated in a Star Academy program at another site. I believe in the program, so any time is the right time.

“Our goal is to ensure every student is college and career ready. Star Academy provides authentic, project-based learning. Our students need engaging lessons that will prepare them for life after school.”

The Star Academy was introduced after students returned from winter break in January, and the program already boasts a full cohort of 80 eighth graders.

Reflecting on the early impact of the program, Barbaree noted, “The students are more engaged in the learning process. They are excited about the ‘new look’ and the hands-on stations. Some of the students have expressed that the lessons are more challenging, but they want to keep going.”

The ribbon-cutting celebration, the district says, signifies a significant step forward in its commitment to providing innovative educational opportunities for its students. The event will feature remarks from district and school leaders, tours of the academy classrooms, and will highlight the importance of this program in preparing students for future success.
