Olympia Receives Service/Community Involvement Award

The Star Academy Service/Community Involvement Award was presented to Olympia Learning Center of Columbia, S.C., at the Star Academy Symposium in Columbia on October 4, 2008.

Olympia Learning Center Principal Nathan White accepted the award on behalf of the school’s Star Academy Program™. The Star Academy is for accelerated learning and dropout prevention.

Students in the Olympia Star Academy are involved in a variety of service projects that impact both the students and the community. Through these service projects, students learn self-confidence and pride through community involvement. Olympia students participate in a Youth Leadership program, job shadowing, and service learning opportunities.

Most recently, they worked with local homeless shelters and the Red Dress Campaign. All female staff and students participated in the Red Dress Rally at the state house and were invited to be photographed with Red Dress ambassadors. One student designed a T-shirt that all Olympia students wore to the rally. Students created and disseminated information about heart disease in women.
