The
Star Academy Pathfinder Award was presented to a pair of South Carolina
officials at the Star Academy Symposium in Columbia on October 4, 2008.
State Director of
Vocational-Technical Education Dr. Bob Couch and Department of Commerce Appalachian Regional Commission Program Manager Dr.
Elizabeth Kovacs received the honor for their part in the planning,
implementation, and funding of the Star Academy Program in South Carolina.
The Star Academy is for accelerated learning and dropout prevention.
The Star Academy Pathfinder Award
goes to state officials who help get the program off the ground and secure
funding sources with which to implement the program. Couch and Kovacs’ faith in
students’ abilities and resolve to help all students succeed and graduate led
to their selection as recipients of this high honor.
The Star Academy Program has been
implemented in schools across South Carolina and recently was expanded to
